Cartier Pilote Paris 'Driver, Baguette Model 820'

Sold

The curved, horizontally inclined, stepped case was designed specifically for the wrist of a driver, allowing the time to be read without ever taking one’s hands off the wheel. An ingenious innovation that speaks volumes about Cartier’s forward-thinking design ethos during the interwar years.

Crafted in yellow gold and measuring 22 × 17 mm, this Baguette Model 820 wristwatch houses a minimalist dial adorned with black Roman numerals and blued steel hands. A cool detail is that the dial is signed 'Cartier' at the 12-hour position and 'France' upside down at the 6-hour position. Beneath the surface beats a manually wound movement by European Watch & Co., the same trusted manufacturer behind many of Cartier’s most exceptional pre-war creations. This rare example also retains its original box and comes with a certificate stamped by the Maison itself.

Provenance
Only a handful of examples of the original 1930s Pilote are known to exist. Some sources suggest as few as three. This particular piece, sold at Monaco Legends Auction in 2023, is considered one of the finer survivors of its kind. It is engraved with a royal monogram on the top side. A detail that underlines its aristocratic provenance.

The Pilote would later be revisited by Cartier in limited re-editions during the 1940s and 1950s. Yet, no reissue ever truly captures the quiet grace and experimental brilliance of the original.

Condition
Nearly ninety years on, this watch tells its story with honesty. The dial shows a charming craquelé texture, yet its markings and Roman numerals remain legible and full of life. The yellow gold case bears the natural signs of age and use, entirely consistent with a watch from 1936. However, it's retaining its beautiful proportions and curved form. It now rests on an elegant green lizard strap that enhances the watch’s personality. For a watch this rare, its condition can only be described as fair but true. Untouched by unnecessary restoration, it carries the kind of patina that seasoned collectors cherish.

A rare survivor of Cartier’s experimental pre-war brilliance, still turning heads nearly a century later.
