Patek Philippe Nautilus 3800/003 'Diamond Bezel & Index'

Sold

There is something about the midsize Nautilus that continues to resonate. At 37.5 mm, the reference 3800 sits in that rare space where everything just works. The case, the bracelet, the dial. It is one of the most complete designs Patek Philippe ever put into production.

This particular 3800/003, executed in yellow gold with a factory diamond-set bezel and deep blue dial, belongs to a different chapter of that story. It reflects a time when the Nautilus began to move beyond its original identity, evolving into something more expressive without losing the integrity of the design.

Moving Water
The dial is what immediately draws your attention. Blue, yet constantly shifting from deep navy to lighter tones depending on the light, almost like looking into moving water. The embossed tapisserie pattern adds texture and rhythm, creating a surface that feels alive rather than flat.

Combined with the diamond hour markers, this Sigma dial takes on a distinctly 1980s character. The period-correct black date wheel completes the composition, a small detail that collectors immediately recognise.

1984, Basel
This watch was sold on October 4th, 1984, in Basel. The mid-1980s were not about holding back. Business was expanding, markets were active, and wealth was worn openly. In cities like Basel, Milan, and Zurich, style carried a certain confidence.

You can imagine the original owner. Perhaps a banker, perhaps a businessman moving between Switzerland and Italy. Tailored suits with relaxed collars, and a gold watch as part of his everyday life.

Condition
The watch is presented in very good condition. It shows light signs of wear, all superficial. Nothing that a light polish could not address, if desired. More importantly, the proportions remain exactly as they should. The case is full, the bezel remains sharp, and the bracelet is exceptionally tight and nearly fully linked. The dial is clean, with matching hands and lume, exactly as you would expect.

If there is one point to note, it is a small scratch on the sapphire crystal, visible only under certain lighting conditions. Minor, easily resolved, but worth mentioning.

The watch comes complete with its original box and certificate.

At Collectors Gallery, we have always been drawn to the Nautilus. The 3800, in particular, holds a special place for us. The proportions, the design, the balance. And especially when executed with this level of detail, it becomes something we genuinely enjoy.
