Patek Philippe Perpetual Calendar 3940R 'Third Series'

At Collectors Gallery, we have always been great admirers of the Patek Philippe 3940. There is something incredibly refreshing about its understated appearance. When people think of complicated Patek Philippe watches, the conversation usually gravitates toward chronographs, often perpetual calendar chronographs. As beautiful as those watches are, they naturally introduce busier dials, additional pushers, and a far more technical presence on the wrist.

The 3940 approaches complication differently. No chronograph. No pushers interrupting the case. Just a perfectly clean, elegant profile paired with a calm and beautifully balanced dial.

A Modern Icon
Introduced in 1985 under the leadership of Philippe Stern, the reference 3940 marked a defining moment for Patek Philippe and for complicated watchmaking as a whole. Mechanical horology had only just begun recovering from the Quartz Crisis, and highly complicated wristwatches were far from commercially obvious. The decision to introduce an ultra-thin automatic perpetual calendar at that moment was therefore not only ambitious, but deeply confident.

Over time, the 3940 became one of the defining modern Patek Philippe references and a cornerstone of serious collecting.

The perpetual calendar display is remarkably legible despite the amount of information presented. Day, date, month, leap year, moonphase; everything is arranged with a sense of proportion and calm that very few complicated watches ever achieve.

Powered by the celebrated ultra-thin calibre 240 Q, the watch retains an elegant profile on the wrist thanks to its micro-rotor construction. The movement allowed Patek Philippe to create a perpetual calendar that remained refined and wearable rather than oversized or overly technical in appearance.

Third Series
This particular example is a reference 3940R-011 produced in the year 2000.

Executed in rose gold, this metal, to our eyes, suits the 3940 perfectly. Compared to yellow gold, rose gold carries a softer warmth and a touch more character. It feels slightly more vintage, slightly less formal, and gives the watch an almost romantic elegance that works beautifully with the classical perpetual calendar layout.

The warm tone of the rose gold case pairs beautifully with the silvered sigma dial, which is further elevated by its beautiful pink gold dauphine hands. As a desirable third-series model, it belongs to the final evolution of the reference. Collectors generally appreciate these later executions for their refined dial details, improved legibility, and overall maturity of production. The classic three-subdial layout has since become one of the most recognisable perpetual calendar designs ever produced.

Condition & Completeness
Condition always matters with watches of this calibre, and this example remains in excellent shape.

The case retains strong proportions with all hallmarks still clearly visible, something very important and increasingly uncommon on precious metal Patek Philippe watches from this period. The lugs remain full, the bezel sharp, and the overall definition of the case exactly as one would hope to see. The dial is clean and well preserved.

The watch is accompanied by its original boxes, booklets, certificate, and the additional solid case back. That final detail is particularly charming. Patek Philippe delivered the 3940 with both a sapphire display back and an extra solid case back, allowing the owner to decide how they wished to wear the watch; either showcasing the movement or preserving a more discreet appearance.
