Rolex Day-Date 18038 'Lapis Lazuli'

$70,000

Lapis Lazuli has been admired for over six thousand years. Once reserved for pharaohs, kings, and artists who ground its pigment into ultramarine for Renaissance paintings. Here, Rolex shaped it into one of their most captivating creations: a natural stone dial that could never be repeated.

Introduced at the tail end of the 1970s, the 18038 marked a new chapter for the Day-Date, featuring the improved caliber 3055 movement with its quickset date function.

A Dial Cut From the Earth Itself
This stunning example from 1979 pairs the unmistakable presence of yellow gold with a dial cut from one of nature’s most beautiful stones. Bright blue in tone, the Lapis reveals dark blue mineral clouds and subtle pyrite inclusions that glimmer like gold dust under light. All evenly spread across the dial, forming a composition that feels both cosmic and timeless. No two Lapis dials are ever the same, but this one stands out for its exceptional balance of color and texture.

Condition
This particular example remains in outstanding condition. The case and lugs retain its sharp edges and finishes, while all hallmarks are still very deep. Also, the fluted bezel is crisp. Most importantly, the dial is flawless: the stone surface is smooth, even, and full of depth. The bracelet is tight and shows very little signs of wear.

We’ll admit it. At Collectors Gallery Dubai, we’re hopelessly in love with Lapis Lazuli. Every dial tells its own story, and this one speaks fluently in blue.
