At Collectors Gallery, we appreciate the Day-Date in all its forms. It is one of the few watches that always feels complete. That said, certain configurations sit further away from the standard offering and hold a special place with us.

This is a Rolex Day-Date reference 18388, produced in 1990. A factory gem-set configuration featuring diamond-set lugs, an alternating diamond and ruby bezel, and a President bracelet with diamond-set center links. Within the Day-Date range, it sits at the more elaborate end of production.

The Crown
Watches like this are often grouped under what collectors refer to as the Rolex Crown Collection.

During the late 1980s and early 1990s, Rolex produced a series of highly decorated Day-Dates, combining precious metals with complex gem-setting. These were not standard catalogue pieces in the traditional sense, but part of a broader offering aimed at a specific clientele.

The Crown Collection represents a period where Rolex explored variation within the Day-Date, using diamonds, sapphires, emeralds, and rubies in different combinations. This reference 18388 sits comfortably within that space.

The “3” in 18388 indicates factory-set diamond lugs, while the “8” refers to a factory-set diamond bezel. The addition of rubies within that bezel does not alter the reference, but reflects the variation Rolex applied within these gem-set pieces.

The dial is not a standard pavé execution, but rather features diamonds set within a structured, almost geometric pattern, creating depth and rhythm across the surface. Each stone sits within its own defined space, giving the dial a more architectural appearance.

Rubies are introduced as round hour markers, with baguette-cut rubies at 6 and 9, adding structure to the composition. Diamonds reflect light sharply and evenly, while rubies carry depth, shifting between red and darker tones depending on the light.

Condition
The watch is presented in razor-sharp condition. The case remains well defined, with strong lines and crisp diamond-set lugs. The bracelet retains its tightness, and the diamond-set center links are intact and well preserved. The bezel shows clean, well-set stones throughout. The dial is equally strong. Overall, the watch shows no signs of heavy wear.

Gem-set pieces like this were not made for a broad audience. Not necessarily centred around traditional Western markets, but often in regions where gemstones carried cultural meaning. Rubies, in particular, have long been associated with prosperity and protection in parts of Asia and the Middle East. A watch like this fits naturally within that context.
